The Ndoro — a spiral once carved from seashells — held deep significance in the ancient Monomotapa Kingdom (14th–17th century), where it adorned the foreheads and chests of nobility. It was more than ornamentation; it was a marker of wealth, power, and elevated status.

By the 16th century, Portuguese traders recognized its value and began crafting Ndoros from porcelain and ceramic for trade, introducing new materials while preserving its revered symbolism. Many of the surviving Ndoros from this era are man-made — yet still imbued with meaning.
