Our silver and black onyx earrings were handmade in our studio in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. We have hand engraved the shape of the Ndoro, an ancient Zimbabwean form of currency, into the silver discs and set a gorgeous big onyx in the middle. The contrast of the silver and black is quite stunning if we say so ourselves!
These earrings are approximately 20 mm round and the onyx in the middle is about 7 to 8 mm round. The onyx was cut locally and the size does vary somewhat.
We have used french hooks for these earrings.
We love to use our stylized version of the Ndoro as it is part of our local history here in Zimbabwe. During the Middle Ages, Great Zimbabwe was the largest Southern African trading hub. Ndoro's were used as a form of currency but were also considered the bling of the day! The more Ndoro's that you wore the higher in status your family were in the kingdom and the wealthier they were.
